1. The July ‘Target Walleye Summer Shootout’ is live!
A virtual walleye derby (catch-photo-release) that we are hosting thru the FishDonkey app all month long. Fish whenever is convenient for you, on any public waters, for a shot at a pile of prizes!
Prizes will be awarded each month (in each of the 5 regions) for the largest walleye, the biggest 3-fish stringer, and random-draw prizes too in case you only catch small ones. 😜
2. MI: Lake Huron NWT kicks off TOMORROW!
Out of Alpena. Over $150K in cash + prizes up for grabs.
After the first two events, Dylan Nussbaum is leading the ‘Angler of the Year’ race – here’s his thoughts coming into this event:
> “Lake Huron is one of the biggest, baddest bodies of water to catch walleyes on. You are going to see a variety of tactics such as trolling cranks/spinners, casting Death Jigs, Jigging Raps, plastics, and live bait, from shallow to deep and everywhere in between. It’s a body of water you never know what to expect. Utilizing LiveScope and Navionics Vision+ on my Garmin electronics will be key for breaking water down efficiently at this event. It’s going to come down to making the right decisions, keeping a close eye on conditions, and paying attention to the little things to pull off a win here.”
> “Going into the third event of the season leading AOY is a great feeling, but I can let that get to me. I am still going into this event with the winning mentality. The guys behind are not going to let up so I need to stay at the top at every event the rest of the season!”
Here’s what veteran walleye pro Chase Parsons had to say:
> “This time of year, there should be plenty of fish within a short trip from take-off but the biggest thing to watch will be wind directions and fluctuating water temps. If water temps drop on the shoreline we’re out of, it could require long runs across one of the roughest bodies of water we fish, so I’m happy to be in a Nitro ZV21! I am expecting nice bags and several guys who may make a long run and find their fish have moved, so finding consistent biting fish will be the key!”
3. MN: DNR wants input on reducing the walleye limit from 6 to 4
Now is the time to speak up (deadline is Aug 15). 👍 I'm all for it.
4. MT: Interesting discussion on FFS in walleye tourneys
5. SD: AFTCO Walleye Throwdown, Lake Oahe, July 26-27
Out of Akaska and held alongside the South Dakota Walleye Classic and Festival. The biggest walleye weighed in during the 2 days wins $10K! I also like that they’re doing 8 bi-hourly cash payouts for the largest walleye caught during each period.
6. Cory Schmidt new Editor-in-Chief at In-Fisherman
Coming over from Z-Man where he was the marketing and public relations manager. Haven’t seen an official announcement go out yet 🕵️♂️ but I spotted the new gig from a caption in this In-Fisherman write-up talking big bluegills.
7. Northland has Tungsten Smeltinators coming
I'm already a big fan of the original Smeltinator for plastics (killer design, colors, and love that stout Gamakatsu hook) so pumped to hear they’re coming out of a tungsten version.
