- That's Travis from Devils Lake Fishing Report talking about the worst case of sandy flesh disease he's ever seen. đ¤˘
|
|
|
Apparently "sandy flesh disease" (aka myofibrogranuloma) is a rare condition thatâs only seen in walleye:
> Fish look normal on the outside but certain areas of the fillet look semi-translucent, or yellowish brown with knotted muscle fibers. The tissue has a very dry freezer burn appearance. Other areas of the fillet may be even granular with mineral deposits or opaque.
> The condition is not infectious. Genetic and environmental stressors may play a role in the development of the disease.
> Due to a lack of concrete scientific knowledge about the spread of the disease, consumption is not recommended.
> Dispose of unused portions by burying or with household waste. Fish entrails should never be discarded back into the lake.
𤢠Yikes! Or how about:

> Accurately mimicking the body shape and detail of a real goby, the Gobius swimbait is poured from impossibly soft yet durable ElaZtech superplastic material, producing maximum underwater movement and longevity. Key specs include a split dorsal fin brush guard, bottom hugging jig harness that enables the Gobiusâ swimming, creeping action while always deflecting cover, and a deep, compressible hook pocket that skyrockets your hookset ratio
Theyâre 3" long and come in 3/8, 1/2, and 3/4 oz weights.
Obviously itâs gotta catch âem in lakes with gobies, but did you also know that thereâs a species of walleye candy called the âsculpinâ thatâs native in more waters than youâd think? 𤍠Google âem. Learn âem. Walleyes devour âem.
7. OH: Walleye Drop Committee looking for volunteers...

Do you pay attention to wind-driven currents on lakes?
Some interesting nuggets you maybe have thought about â plucked from this awesome Mark Strand write-up on In-Fisherman called âMr. Walleye: The Extraordinary Life of Gary Roachâ thatâs for sure worth a read. Few quick, tippy excerpts below:
> To this day, Gary Roach wonders why more walleye anglers donât focus on the shady side of structural elements. And how they arenât more attuned to trends in wind direction.
> âLike on Mille Lacs,â he explains, âyou know how when the wind blows like crazy for three days, it piles up water on the southeast corner, right? Itâs up over the docks down there.
> âSo, what happens to that water when the wind stops blowing? It goes back to level again, across the lake. But now there are currents you can fish. Itâs like a river. The walleyes face into that current, where the seams are and you feed your bait to them where theyâre looking for it.â
> Observations like these come from experience and only to those who strive to work out the puzzle. Thatâs why Roach strongly believes you can only learn so much from seminars and watching YouTube videos. Combining the latest technology with an inquisitive mind and lots of fishing time will always be the real path.
> Yet, as we also know, some people are blessed with an extra scoop of whatever the secret sauce really is. And they think itâs easier than it is.
> âIt doesnât take a brain surgeon,â says Roach. âYou just have to figure out whatâs happening out there, you know? All the lakes are the same and the fish are the fish.â
> Modern walleye fishing wouldn't be what it is without the contributions and dedication of Gary Roach, who's affectionately known as Mr. Walleye.
