“One in a billion” GOLDEN walleye caught...twice! 🤯

Look at this B-E-A-Utiful (and ultra rare) 27” golden walleye that Ethan Bear caught just a couple weeks back in eastern ND:

Congrats on the walleye of a zillion lifetimes! What an incredible specimen.

Ethan said he was using a 7’ 2” medium fast Abu Garcia Zenon, pitching a green 3/8-oz Northland Tackle jig paired with a ‘crawler ton top of a 15’ ridge surrounded by 25’ of water.
Btw that walleye is believed to have a rare genetic variation called xanthism. Little info:
> “Xanthism is a rare genetic condition similar to albinism because both involve unusual pigment changes. While albinism causes a total or partial lack of dark melanin, xanthism causes an overabundance of yellow or orange pigment.”
Equally as cool is that Ethan released the fish to keep those glorious genetics in the lake, and to hopefully be caught again some day – which it was.... 👀
Just one week later, Jacob Wendel caught the same “one in a billion” fish. S’more hard proof that catch and release works. ♻️

TJ Erickson’s summertime weed walleye breakdown 🌿

Gotta give props to northern-MN hammer TJ Erickson on kicking out some incredible YouTube content. He does a GREAT job of explaining the “how” and “why” in his videos, and not just the “what” like most other folks.... He always includes lots of map examples, shows his electronics so you can see what he’s seeing, and walks you thru his approach and the decision-making process.
This video is from last summer, but timely stuff right now, and does a great job of breaking down how to fish three key types of weed cover for summertime walleyes – sparse, thick, and patchy – and how each one affects your approach. From bait selection to boat positioning, he shows you the exact tactics that help trigger bites in different types of vegetation.

Find deep bottom transitions for summer walleyes 🎯
In case you missed it, this throwback Tom Boley YouTube video called “The secret walleye spot no one is fishing” has some interesting info on why it can be more important to pay attention to your Side Imaging than your map/GPS this time of year.
The secret location where he finds summertime walleyes stacked is hard to soft bottom transitions. Stuff in that 30′ or so range where massive pieces of structure taper off into the soft bottom basin.
Same thing can be #money in the springtime if you can find similar hard to soft transitions in shallower 10-15′ water. I’ll completely ignore my map once I’m on one, and follow that brighter vs darker return or line on my Humminbird Side Imaging.
But hey, it’s not springtime, so I’ll save that for another day. Now let’s get into Tom’s summertime location more walleyes will be piling out onto every day until temps cool off:
