3. OH: Charity walleye tourney raising money for DV survivors
> Local charity organization Reelin’ for a Reason is hosting its first-ever Women’s Charity Walleye Tournament in downtown Lorain [Lake Erie] on July 18 to raise money for domestic violence survivors.
> All funds raised from the event tickets, donations and registrations will go toward Lorain County Safe Harbor (Genesis House) and the Cleveland Rape Center. Both organizations provide services for survivors and their families including emergency shelter, 24-hour crisis support, legal advocacy and counseling.

> [Mille Lacs area supervisor Greg Berg] outlined the extensive hierarchy concerning the management of Mille Lacs saying “it’s very diverse and complex compared to the way a lot of lakes are managed in Minnesota. There’s many, many layers involved here.” He noted Governor Walz is ultimately at the top of the chain of command.
> It should also be noted that the two Minnesota bands – Mille Lacs and Fond Du Lac have their own natural resource agencies called the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission (GLIFWC) that manages the six Wisconsin bands as well. “We meet about three times a year with the technical committee, and there’s about 20 people on that committee," he said, adding “The big meeting is in January and that’s when we discuss all the modeling information and decide what the safe harvest level is going to be for the upcoming fishing year.”

7. ID: Interesting Snake River study on walleye stomach contents
Walleye were illegally introduced into the Columbia River system decades ago and have since migrated into the Snake River, where they’re a predation risk to juvenile salmon and steelhead. Reminder this is the area where salmon and steelhead are listed on the Endangered Species Act.
> By percentage, prawns (a kind of freshwater shrimp and grow up to 3 inches] were the most frequently found item in walleye stomachs nearly year-round, ranging from 28% in midsummer to nearly 80% during the winter months.
> Only in late fall was another fish found more frequently than prawns, and that was young shad, representing more than 40% of occurrences in October and November.
> The Idaho Department of Fish and Game says that the prawn diet “allows juvenile walleye to better survive and grow to the size at which they convert to eating fish [aka salmon and steelhead smolts].
> The researchers say the “indirect effect” of shad and prawns subsidizing walleye diets until the buffet of smolts arrives “is of serious concern given that American shad now comprise > 90% of the anadromous fish returning to the Columbia River Basin (a recent run exceeded 7-million fish) and they are expanding in both abundance and geographic extent.”
